week 1

E Learning, What is E Learning? Everyone has their own opinion on how much the term E Learning covers. For example - teaching children how to play a DS, Xbox or Playstation... should this be classed as E Learning? In my opinion it should be. In my opinion E Learning is teaching involving computer technology from gaming consoles to the electronics involved in flying a 747. With technology advancing at a rapid rate this type of learning will become central to a holistic education. It is my belief that the explicit teaching of the use of these technologies will also become crucial. How we teach this technology is changing as well as the content we teach. Will look forward to hearing your view on this subject.

  1. Hi Barry, I have to agree with you. I believe the DS, Xbox and Playstation is all part of e-Learning. The Xbox and Playstation can be used to communicate with others from all around the world, buy online games, movies and music and more. There are many more applications these divices can offer us but they are yet to come to AUS.

Plus i don't think a Learning Manager would have any trouble enagaing students in the learning task when a Gaming console is involved. :)

  2. Hi Barry, I also agree that computer games are part of technology and can be used in teaching and learning activities, as long as it is in a meaningful way that promotes student success. For example I am a big advocate of certain educational CD-Rom packages whereby students work through problems, such as in math, reading and spelling. After they have worked through five questions they win a reward, the rewards being they get to choose a game of their choice to play. There normally is a time limit, and this depends on how many questions the student answered correctly. I have seen these CD-Roms used first hand and the students are very engaged and eager to learn as they do not see them directly as doing "work" but as playing computer games. Another notable mention is that they are readily available for parents, not just schools. For parents they are tax deductible, where as it might be hard to get a tax deduction on XBox or Wii games for the time being.
